In an interview with Oasis, Rev Why Duvenhage, a South African pastor and former police chaplain, shares why he has dedicated his life to supporting law enforcement officers spiritually and emotionally.

I’m Rev. Why Duvenhage, a South African pastor with a passion for law enforcement chaplaincy and community outreach. As a chaplain in the South African Police Service, I founded the Christian Police Association of South Africa to provide spiritual and emotional support to officers. After leaving the police service, I transitioned into full-time ministry at Stellenberg Gemeente, a Dutch Reformed Church in Cape Town.

In 1994, my colleagues and I from the Christian Police Association began organizing camps at Apostle Battery, a former World War II army base.

What started as a small initiative grew into something much larger—Jabulani Africa Ministries (JAM). In 2007, we officially launched JAM to offer leadership training and community outreach in underprivileged areas, leading to an incredible journey ever since.

Today, I have the honor of representing Africa on the board of the International Christian Police Fellowship.

What has come out of gifting the NLT Bibles to police officers?

Having this NLT Bible is a dream come true. A few years ago, we recognized the need for a police Bible for Africa. The Christian Police Association exists in the USA and the UK, where they have their own specially curated Bibles. I connected with Vincent Bosha from Oasis International, and now we have our police Bible! It is beautifully designed, and its focus on police-specific content is unique and impactful. It truly brings the word of God closer to the hearts of police officers.

Police work is challenging, and officers can often feel overwhelmed, especially when tasked with protecting and serving in areas where crime is on the rise. These Bibles, along with discipleship, provide hope and strength to police officers and the entire service.

What is your dream for the future?

Recently, we handed 170 Bibles to the Commissioner of Police in Eswatini (formerly Swaziland). We received 1,500 copies and are in the process of distributing them to more officers in South Africa. We have also received requests from several African countries, including Botswana, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Uganda, Zambia, Burundi, and Kenya.

We are currently facing a shipping challenge and are praying for the Lord to open ways to ease this process.”
