Based on “The Holy Spirit: Our Perfect Helper” by Richard J. Gehman

Imagine if Jesus was still on the earth with us today.

If Christ never ascended into heaven but remained on earth as a teacher and Christian leader, what would our lives look like? We could ask him all our questions and hear his opinion on every current issue. We could go visit Jesus and have dinner with him. Maybe we could even bring sick people to Jesus for him to miraculously heal.

It definitely sounds appealing.

But as amazing as having Jesus with us would be, Jesus had an even better plan. What if, instead of having God with us, we could have God in us?

In John 16:7, Jesus said that “it is best for you that I go away, because if I don’t, the Advocate won’t come. If I do go away, then I will send him to you.”

Incredibly, having the promised Advocate is even better than having Jesus. This Advocate is the Holy Spirit, the third person of the Trinity.

While many Christians are familiar with the Father and the Son, the Holy Spirit is often neglected, underestimated, or misrepresented. The Bible has a lot to say about the Spirit, but we often get confused about what is true.

Dr Richard Gehman is here to provide answers. His recent book “The Holy Spirit: Our Perfect Helper” carefully walks us through what the Bible teaches about the Holy Spirit. Verse by verse and chapter by chapter, Gehman helps us understand the truth about our greatest ally.

Getting to know the Holy Spirit is one of the most important things a Christian can do. As Gehman puts it, “The Spirit of God has a vital, essential role to play in our salvation, in the life of the church, and in the world today. He is our Helper.” All Christians have the Spirit dwelling within us. His presence in our bodies turns our beings into temples of God himself. As we open our hearts to the Holy Spirit, every area of our lives can be transformed.

The Holy Spirit has been at work since the creation of the world. In the Old Testament, the Spirit strengthened leaders for special purposes and revealed truth to the prophets. In the New Testament, the Spirit was active in Jesus’s ministry, empowered him to do miracles, and was his constant companion.

But once Jesus ascended into heaven, the Spirit was poured out on the earth like never before. At Pentecost, the followers of Jesus were baptized with the Holy Spirit and equipped to carry the gospel to the world. The formerly-timid disciples were filled with boldness and strength, courageously proclaiming the gospel to Jews and Gentiles alike.

To this day, the Holy Spirit works in God’s people, changing us from the inside out and making us more like Christ. When there is sin our lives, the Spirit convicts us. When we don’t know what to pray, the Spirit intercedes for us. When we’re confused by God’s Word, the Spirit enables us to understand the Bible. When we’re weak and helpless, the Spirit helps us produce good fruit.

In fact, the Spirit is connected to our spiritual growth from the very beginning. Once Christians are saved, the Spirit is the one who regenerates us. He secures us in our salvation, and is the down payment of our eternal reward. He will be with us until the very end—when the last day comes, the Holy Spirit will be the one to resurrect us.

As if that’s not amazing enough, the Holy Spirit also gives Christians spiritual gifts. These gifts equip us to serve other Christians and build up the church. While people have different opinions about certain controversial gifts—such as prophecy, healing, and tongues—all spiritual gifts are meant to be unifying, not divisive, and to point us towards Jesus.

Without the Holy Spirit, Christians have no hope. We desperately need our perfect helper in every area of life. If you desire to get to know your truest friend, Richard Gehman’s “The Holy Spirit: Our Perfect Helper,” is an ideal resource. Gehman reminds us of what is true about the third person of the Trinity, and what that means for us.

If you’re a Christian, you have God himself living within you. You can be confident that you are loved, blessed, and gifted more than you can ever imagine.
